A wind-damaged roof rarely loses shingles into the yard. It loses seal bonds and gains creases — damage that stays invisible until the next storm finds it.

How Wind Actually Damages a Roof

Wind damage is a sequence, not a single event. Understanding the sequence is what separates a real inspection from a glance from the driveway.

Seal Strip Failure

Every asphalt shingle relies on a thermally activated adhesive strip bonding it to the course below. Wind that breaks that bond leaves the shingle lying in place but no longer sealed — it looks untouched from the ground and is functionally loose.

Tab Creasing

When a shingle folds back and drops again, the fold leaves a crease across the mat. The fiberglass mat and the surface granules both fracture along that line, and water tracks through it in later storms.

Uplift at Rakes and Ridges

Wind pressure is not uniform across a roof. It concentrates at edges, rakes, ridges and corners, which is why damage clusters there first and why perimeter details matter so much on a windy site.

Progressive Lifting

Once a course loses its seal, wind gets underneath it and works on the course above. What began as a handful of unsealed shingles on one rake spreads across the slope over successive storms.

Fastener Back-Out

Repeated flexing loosens nails. Backed-out fasteners eventually tent the shingle above them and create a small raised path for water at the nail penetration itself.

Debris Impact

Wind carries branches, tree limbs and material off neighboring structures. Impact damage often sits alongside pure wind damage on the same roof and is documented separately.

A Creased Shingle Is Damaged Even If It Never Blew Off

This is the single most common point of disagreement in a wind claim. A homeowner walks the yard, finds nothing, and assumes the roof came through fine. Meanwhile a whole rake of shingles has been folded back by the gust and dropped again, each one carrying a fracture line across the mat where it bent.

The crease matters because the shingle's waterproofing depends on an intact mat and an intact granule surface. Once the mat is fractured, that line becomes the weak point. Granules shed along it, UV reaches the asphalt underneath, and the shingle begins to fail on a timeline the manufacturer never designed for. It will not necessarily leak this month. It will not last its rated life either.

The same is true of a shingle whose seal strip has released. It is still nailed in place, still sitting flat, and no longer bonded to the course below. A hand test tells you immediately: a sealed shingle resists, an unsealed one lifts freely. That is a test an adjuster will perform too, and it is one of the things we document with photos during an inspection so the condition is on record.

Why Gable-End Homes Take More Wind Damage

Roof shape changes how wind behaves over a house. A gable roof presents a flat vertical wall of siding at each end, rising to a point. Wind striking that wall has nowhere to go but up and around, and the pressure differential at the rake edge tries to peel the shingles off the deck from the edge inward. The rake is also where the shingle has the least material holding it down.

A hip roof slopes on all four sides. There is no vertical gable wall to catch the wind, the airflow separates more gently, and the loads spread across four planes instead of concentrating at two exposed edges. That geometry is why hip roofs generally perform better in high wind and why, on a mixed street, gable-end houses often show damage while their hip-roofed neighbors do not.

It also affects what an inspection should prioritize. On a gable home, the rakes, ridge and the first few courses inboard of each rake get the closest attention. On a hip home, the hips, ridge and the corners are the areas that tend to go first.

What to Photograph After a Wind Event

Documentation taken in the first day or two is worth more than anything gathered later, because it ties the condition to the event. Stay on the ground — nothing on this list is worth a ladder.

  • Wide shots of each elevation of the house from the ground, so the roof can be oriented later
  • Any shingles or shingle fragments in the yard, photographed where they landed before cleanup
  • Debris such as branches or fencing that came down in the same event
  • Close-ups of visible gaps, lifted tabs or missing shingles taken with zoom rather than from a ladder
  • Interior ceiling or wall staining, with a date visible if possible
  • Damage to fences, gates, gutters and downspouts, which helps establish wind direction
  • The date and rough time you first noticed the damage, written down while it is fresh

Carriers work from dates of loss. If you are unsure exactly when the wind event that damaged your roof occurred, the National Weather Service Chicago office publishes event summaries you can check against your own records.

The Matching Problem With Discontinued Shingles

Repairing wind damage assumes a replacement shingle exists that matches what is on the roof. Frequently it does not. Manufacturers discontinue lines, rename colors and change blend recipes, and a roof installed fifteen or twenty years ago may be carrying a product that simply is not made anymore.

Even when the line survives, the shingles on the roof have weathered. Granule color shifts with UV exposure, so a genuinely correct new shingle can still read as a different color from the street. On a front-facing slope that difference is obvious.

When matching is not possible, the question becomes how the policy treats it, and that is a policy and carrier question rather than a contractor question. What we do is establish the facts: identify the existing product where we can, document our attempt to source a match, and put the finding in writing so the carrier has accurate information to work from. We do not tell homeowners what the outcome will be.

Emergency Tarping

When wind has opened the roof, the priority is stopping water before anything else. We install temporary tarping secured properly at the perimeter so it holds through the following night rather than lifting with the next gust — an improperly anchored tarp can do more damage than no tarp.

Tarping is a holding measure, and we photograph the underlying condition before covering it so the damage is recorded before it is hidden. Permanent repair or replacement follows once the roof is dry and the scope is settled.
